A National Toshaos Council (NTC) has been established to represent Amerindians and develop indigenous communities. The NTC will seek to provide training and education for Toshaos and village councilors. The decision to establish the NTC came at a three-day conference held in May at the Lake Mainstay Resort on the Essequibo Coast and attended by over 100 Toshaos.

The NTC will seek to provide access to modern technology, serve as a dispute resolution body and promote and preserve indigenous culture. Moreover, the Council will appoint people to the Indigenous People’s Commission, provide links between donor agencies and indigenous communities and also monitor village council elections.
