Mayor Celso Daniel of Santo André, a community in the São Paulo metropolitan area, was found murdered after being kidnapped on Jan. 18. Daniel, 50, was a leader of the leftist Workers Party (PT), coordinator of the party’s government program and a close adviser to PT presidential candidate Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

Daniel was the second PT mayor to be murdered recently. Mayor Antônio da Costa Santos of Campinas was killed Sept. 10. Two other PT mayors and a city council member were victims of attacks 2001. An organization identifying itself as the Brazilian Revolutionary Action Front (FARB) sent letters last year in which it threatened 15 PT mayors with death.

In December the PT submitted to the government a report detailing 93 attacks, death threats and assassinations of party leaders and members in 22 of the country’s 26 states.

"There has been an unprecedented escalation in violence against the party," said Aloísio Mercadante, PT secretary of international relations, who has also received threats.
